09:30–11:45 · Pigeon Island snorkeling

09:30Land at Pigeon Island National Park (tickets pre-arranged) · same shared boat
Offshore ~1 km from Nilaveli · morning meeting point was the PIT office, not this park pin
09:30–11:45 Pigeon Island · snorkel the coral gardens Included · turtles on the plan
Why today
Operator itinerary: snorkel the shallow coral gardens — turtles, blacktip reef sharks and 300+ fish species. Green and hawksbill sea turtles graze here year-round (wildlife · not a separate ticket · never touch, chase or feed). Back on Nilaveli Beach around midday.
Getting there
Already on the booked combo boat from the 06:00 departure — no second boarding
Time to spend
~09:30–11:45 on the operator timetable · mask, fins and life jackets provided
Cost
NP tickets in the package · not prepaid · see Money
What to expect
Wet boat boarding, sharp coral rubble, strong sun, limited shade. Wear water shoes and life jackets; never stand on coral. Keep distance from turtles — observe, don't pursue.

Boat path · a calm habit that keeps the swim easy

Boats use the channel between the beach and the mooring buoys. Stay behind the buoy line, enter and leave from the marked beach, and surface with a hand raised when you come up — then the skipper can see you clearly.

More details · park safety & reef rules

Give the boat lane a wide berth

The stretch between the beach and the mooring buoys is the boat lane — boats arrive and leave there. Stay out of that strip and enjoy the reef behind the buoys.

  • From the helm, a snorkeler’s head is easy to miss in glare or chop — staying behind the buoys keeps you where boats don’t go.
  • Loaded boats need room to slow; giving them clear water makes everyone’s morning smoother.
  • Cross behind moored boats, not in front; surface with one arm raised so you’re easy to spot.
  • Sound travels oddly underwater — if you hear an engine nearby, pause on the surface with an arm up rather than swimming toward the noise.

Simple habit: enter and exit at the marked beach · stay behind the buoy line · cross behind moored boats · surface with a hand raised.

Never stand on coral

It cuts you and kills decades of growth in a second.

Do not feed the fish

It disrupts natural behaviour and is prohibited by park law.

Do not collect shells

Everything in the park, living or dead, stays in the park.

No plastic waste

Protect marine life — whatever comes with you leaves with you.

📷 Photography tips
Pigeon Island National Park off Nilaveli
Pigeon Island National Park
  • Your snorkel is ~09:30–11:45 (after whales) — favour shots earlier in that window while light and water are clearer; glare rises toward midday.
  • A simple action camera with a red filter brings the coral colours back to life below 2 metres.
  • Approach turtles slowly from the side, never from above — you’ll get longer, closer encounters.
  • If the camera glass fogs when it hits the water, hold it under for ~1 minute before you start shooting.
